Martin Hedges Sponsorship Fund
Details
In 2020, we received news that Martin Hedges had passed away following a long battle with cancer.
Originally from Andover, Martin competed for Southampton Amateur Athletic Club (one of our previous incarnations) in the 1960s. He emigrated to Australia in the 70s living in Brisbane until his passing in June last year.
Martin was passionate about sport, mentoring international athletes at his first club Andover AC, and becoming Queensland Badminton Open Doubles champion in 1978.
Following his retirement from playing badminton he became involved in the administration of the sport and managed three Queensland Badminton teams and an Australian team in 1981.
A Lifelong bachelor, with no surviving relatives, Martin has kindly left Southampton AC a very generous gift from his estate. This legacy will be put towards something that benefits the whole club and will provide a fitting memorial to Martin.
£5000 from the Martin Hedges legacy fund has been allocated to cover the next 5 years.
That allows £1000/year although this could be flexible (i.e £1500 year 1, £500 year 2 etc.). This could be topped up with other SAC funds in future years (subject to review)
Grants of up to a maximum of £100 per member, per year.
Grant is open to All full club members (Athletes, Coaches, Officials and Volunteers)
Grant available to cover equipment or travel that is not already covered by other SAC initiatives.
Grants will be awarded based on its benefits to the member and to the club. This is not a hardship fund (covered elsewhere)

Process
Club asks for applications in April each year, and a sub committee will allocate the funds by 1st May.
Allowance should be made for urgent requests made later in the year that weren’t anticipated in April. However, these should be treated as exceptional.
Member submits an application that will include:
- How much they are requesting
- What the grant will be spent on
- How it will benefit them
- How it will benefit the club
Requests should be sent to the SAC Chair (chair@southamptonathleticclub.org.uk)
Ongoing commitment to club is required:
- The member will regularly represent the club at club events
- T&F leagues or XC/road SAC team events etc.
- Must remain a member for at least the year
- The member assists the club in publicising the award.
Failure to comply with these terms will result in the grant being returned.
