Trackside cabins update

New floor in middle cabin

Dear Members

You may be wondering what all the work is going on to the trackside cabins, and why we're doing it

The cabins have suffered from years of nil investment and SAC have been trying to literally keep them standing until such time as the Southampton City Council funded Sports Centre redevelopment  project is underway and complete. This looks likely to be at least 2 to 3 years hence. The cabins are in  a very poor state of repair with extensive rot to the main cabin rear corner, and  a large hole to the floor in the middle cabin caused by a badly leaking roof. It soon became apparent that emergency repairs and decorations would need to be carried out to provide the 2 to 3 year lifespan required.

Work in progress

With the exception of buying in expertise such as a carpentry, a roofing and an electrical contractor, other works have been carried out by volunteers to keep costs to a minimum. We did look at other options such as hiring or buying  second hand cabins but costs were prohibitive; the option to repair being a fraction of the cost.

With regards to the Sports Centre Redevelopment Project, SAC have met with the new Conservative Administration at Southampton City Council who have reaffirmed their commitment to the project.  A public consultation document is expected at the end of July which we will send to all SAC members and we would encourages everyone to respond.

In the meantime, if you're at the track and the cabins are open, pop in & see what we're doing !

Best Wishes
SAC Committee
