Pete Wareing 1946 – 2022

It is with huge sadness that we write to inform that Pete Wareing passed away on Thursday 1st December. Many will know Pete as the dedicated head coach of our Junior Sprint training group and others will know him as an official, qualified in both Field and Track and many more will know him as a friend, gentleman and stalwart of Southampton Athletic Club.

Pete’s journey into club athletics began in the 1980’s when, at work someone needed  a sprint coach for an athletics group. As a sprinter himself he bought some books, thought he’d give it ago and never looked back. With over 40 years of coaching Pete will at some point have coached and inspired generations of athletes.

A trained official and until recently, Pete would also drive the minibus for the UK Women’s Athletics League team all over the UK. This is where he can be seen with his constant companion Tim and band of officials who gave their summers over to ensure the success of the UKWAL team.

Pete will be missed by all of us and he leaves behind a legacy that will be difficult to fill. He also leaves us with many happy memories, his unquestionable support to SAC and all that knew him. He is going to be missed by so many athletes, coaches and care givers.

Funeral details will be published on the SAC website when known.
