Martin Hedges

6th November 1942 - 14th June 2020

Martin Hedges

Last month we received news that Martin Hedges had passed away following a long battle with cancer.

Originally from Andover, Martin competed for Southampton Amateur Athletic Club (one of our previous incarnations) in the 1960s. He emigrated to Australia in the 70s living in Brisbane until his passing in June last year.

Martin was passionate about sport, mentoring international athletes at his first club Andover AC, and becoming Queensland Badminton Open Doubles champion in 1978.

Following his retirement from playing badminton he became involved in the administration of the sport and managed three Queensland Badminton teams and an Australian team in 1981.

A Lifelong bachelor, with no surviving relatives, Martin has kindly left Southampton AC a very generous gift from his estate. This legacy will be put towards something that benefits the whole club and will provide a fitting memorial to Martin.

Jon Tilt will be working with the SAC committee to propose a suitable way of investing this legacy that reflects Martin’s passion for sport. If you would like to help or have appropriate ideas, please contact Jon directly. (email: jon.tilt@gmail.com).

Martin’s friend, Richard Gordon, in Queensland sent us the following pictures from Martin’s time at Southampton.
