Samantha Callaway & Sophie Merritt take english schools titles on day 2 of championships

The clubs young athletes won a further 2 english schools titles as the championships concluded in Gateshead yesterday. Sam Callaway improved on her 4th place finish last year to take the junior girls discus title and with it a junior discus boys and girls double for Bill Bushnell (Josh) and father Dave's (Sam) throws training group after Josh Douglas's success on Friday.  Sam threw 35.19m and was nearly 4m clear of her nearest competitor to win the English schools crown. Sophie Merritt won an incredible 6th english schools title in a row to take the senior girls shot putt title with a putt of 13.64m.  To win a english schools title both years in in all 3 age groups (junior, intermediate & senior) must be a record and is an amazing achievment for Sophie. Elsewhere in Gateshead yesterday, for the senior boys, Adam Jones took high jump bronze with a leap of 2.03m.  Mo Mahamed was 8th in the 3000m and this should be put in the context of a month of fasting and prayer as Muslims marked the end of ramadan only on Tuesday.  Matthew Callaway was 15th in the discus. For the intermediate boys, Reiss Jarvis ran a huge pb of 50.25 seconds to finish 4th in the 400m final. Zak Mahamed was 10th in the 3000m. In the junior boys age group, James Jerram was 4th in the 800m final and Josh Wise was 6th in the javelin. For the senior girls, Izzy Bryant was 6th in the 100m final, Anna Sharp was 8th in the 1500m steeplechase final and Hollie Garrathy was 9th in the triple jump.  Izzy and Amy Teal were both part of the Hampshire team that won the silver medal in the 4 x 100m relay. In the intermediate girls age group, Amaya Scott was 7th in the high jump and for the junior girls Anna Merritt was 13th and Elizabeth Adamson 19th in the same discus competition that was won by Sam.
