Mo wins place in British Team

Mo Mahamed sealed his place in the British junior mens team for the european cross country championships in France in 2 weeks time by finishing 3rd in the British athletics cross challenge event in Liverpool yesterday. These are unprecedented times for the club as Mo becomes the third man from the club to win a British vest for a major championship event this year.  Mo makes it a clean sweep of age groups by taking his place in the junior mens (U20) race in the european championships after Dave Henson (senior) and Oli Bromby (U18) reached finals at the IPC & youth world championships earlier this year. 18 year old Mo has been with the club since the age of 14 and along with his brothers has been superbly guided by coach and mentor Pete Haynes. Yesterday's cross challenge races acted as the British trials with the first 5 home in the junior mens race all guarenteed selection in the 6 strong team for France.  Mo was always amongst the leading group and finished 3rd just 7 secs behind winner Ben Dijkstra who reversed the placings on Mo from the first cross challenge race.  Niall Holt ran a fine race in 29th and Mo's brother Abdi was 70th. In a high quality senior womens race, last years European cross country champion Gemma Steel won the race and Louise Webb was 42nd with Laura Brenton 66th. In the senior mens race, the club had 3 representatives with Matthew Bennett coming 77th, Matt Revier 178th and James Smith 193rd. Zak Mahamed was the first athlete from the club to run yesterday and made it a great day in the Mahamed household by winning the U15 boys race making it two out of two in the cross challenge series.
