Bromby & Merritt make England team for Commonwealth youth games
England athletics today announced that Oli Bromby and Sophie Merritt would be part of the 21 strong atheltics team to represent England at the commonwealth youth games in Somoa in September. Both Oli & Sophie are completely home grown members of the club with Oli being introduced to the club at the age of 9 when membership secretary & supply teacher Fiona Webb spotted Oli's potential at Shirley Junior school. At the same time, Sophie joined the club and both became part of Brian Fisher's junior training group (the forerunner to today's academy). From then Oli progressed to Sara Macdonald Gray's sprint training group and Sophie to Dave Callaway's shot putt training group and Bill Bushnell's discus group and the rest is blood, sweat & tears.
Both young athletes will be travelling half way across the world to represent their country at the start of their International careers. Oli will be running 100m & 4 x 100m relay and Sophie will be competing in shot putt & discus and we wish them best the best of luck, your club is proud of you.
