Mo wins England vest at English schools cross country championships as Southampton boys help Hampshire take team title
The young athletes completed their last championship cross country event of the season in style at the English schools cross country championships at Castle Donington in Leicestershire yesterday. Southampton AC athletes were well to the fore and none more so than Mo Mahamed who took 4th place in the Intermediate boys race to win his England vest for next weeks Schools International Athletics Board home countries match in Bolton. Success didn't stop there as the Hampshire team also took team gold with 4 Southampton AC athletes in the 6 to score. George Butler was 15th and bottom of the age group Luke Powell & Sam Costley were 59th & 73rd respectively.
In the junior boys race, brother Zak was 6th and Patrick Whelan ran a fine race to be 121st on his county schools debut. Hampshire also took gold in the team race leaving the athletics community in no doubt of the strength on cross country running in the county.
For the senior boys, the Hampshire team were 4th and 2nd Hampshire man home was Stephen Simpson who took a fine 20th place with Lucas Clements coming home 143rd.
There were no Southampton AC runners in the junior girls race but in the intermediate girls, Alana Spiers was the 3rd Hampshire girl to finish in 126th place with Anna sharp in 147th both counting in the Hampshire team that were 13th.
In the senior girls race, Caitlin Stewart was 122nd.
